Emergency Text Messaging in Shropshire

West Mercia Police have a facility for receiving emergency calls from a mobile phone Text message.

The text message is automatically transcribed to an email and an alarm in the control room at Police HQ Hindlip Hall Worcestershire.

This service is only available in West Mercia Police area –
                               Shropshire – Worcestershire  -- Herefordshire.

West Midland Police have a different system that you have to pre -  register before you can use this service.

Some other police forces have trials in progress, all with different numbers.

Some Police forces may not have a service at all.

If someone is available to dial 999 then they must do so even after a text message has been sent. This will maximize the response.

The text message may not be delivered immediately, depending on how busy the mobile phone network is at the time.
The mobile phone companies are developing systems to prioritize these calls.
The person who makes the call will get a reply to confirm that the Police have read the message.

If you require Fire or ambulance service the police will pass the request on via their direct line communications.

You must keep your mobile phone switched ON to receive further instructions or requests.

A note about Motorways

On the motorway network it is always better if possible for someone to use the emergency phones that are every mile. There are marker posts every 100 meters indicating the direction of the nearest phone box. All motorway phones are fitted with audio loop handsets.
It is never necessary to cross the motorway to a phone.
When you lift the phone handset the police operator knows exactly where you are.
Walking on the hard shoulder is extremely dangerous and must only be done in extreme circumstances.
Whilst waiting for a response keep well away from the carriageway and observe the on coming traffic.

Street Name, and town.
The number of the Road, Motorway, Junction, Marker post if available.
        Any Landmarks

Give          DETAILS of what is happening.

Give details of your disability,
 DEAF, SPEECH IMPAIRED,
        This information will help the crew that responds.
